Checkmate: The Betrayal

Episode 1

Derek Green has spent ten years married to Ivy Hill, believing he knows his life. Then, in a single unguarded moment, he stumbles onto the truth: Ivy is pregnant, and the child is not his. The father is Kevin Payne, a poor student Derek has been funding out of sheer generosity.

What stings worse is the casual cruelty behind his back. Ivy and Kevin talk about Derek like he's a fool, waiting for the day their child inherits everything he built. Derek says nothing. He swallows the discovery whole and decides to keep playing the devoted husband, quietly raising the boy as his own while his real plan begins to take shape.

Episode 2

Kevin Payne starts showing up at Derek's home more and more, always with a convenient excuse. When Derek Jr. has a kindergarten parent-child activity, Ivy explains she didn't want to bother Derek at work, so she invited Kevin instead.

Kevin pours on the gratitude, thanking Derek for years of support and insisting he only came to help. He dotes on the boy, calling him like a son, and asks whether Derek minds. Derek doesn't flinch. He welcomes it, saying he's grateful anyone would care for his wife and child while he's busy. Ivy backs him up smoothly. The whole scene is warm, friendly, and completely staged.

Episode 3

The morning of the kindergarten outing becomes a small test. Derek Jr. is asked where he wants his father to go—the office or the kindergarten with him and Mom. The boy picks the office, so Daddy can work, and Kevin can come along instead.

Ivy praises the child for being so considerate, and Kevin piles on more flattery about what a wonderful son Derek must have raised. Derek agrees to the plan and watches them leave together. Alone, he lets the mask slip for just a moment. This is only the beginning, and Ivy and Kevin have no idea who they're really playing against.

Episode 4

Kevin's visits grow bolder. He no longer waits for Derek to leave the house—he invents reasons to come by even when Derek is home, bringing gifts, cooking meals, and playing the grateful young man repaying a benefactor.

Derek never refuses him. He funds Kevin's new business, buys him slippers to match his own, and lets him hover around Ivy and the boy. Kevin even buys Derek Jr. a game console to celebrate the end of exams. Ivy cheerfully tells Derek how well Kevin looks after them when he's away. Derek smiles, thanks him, and keeps handing over money. He knows exactly what he's watching.

Episode 5

Exam results arrive, and Derek Jr.'s score is dismal. Instead of shame, the boy shrugs it off—his family is rich, so his father can just buy him a place. Ivy scolds him, reminding him Derek planned to retire early and hand over the company, and that a weak heir won't earn the respect of the management.

Kevin chimes in with the same lecture, playing the concerned uncle. Derek stays calm and says he's already mapped it out: study abroad, then come home and take over naturally. Everything he owns is meant for the boy. In private, though, Derek's thought is cold—they laugh at how foolish he is, while he laughs at how naive they are.

Episode 6

Derek arranges for his son to tour every department of the company, introducing him to the veterans who will one day work under him. Then it's time for the airport. The boy leaves to study overseas, with Ivy fussing over warm clothes and Kevin quietly making sure everything is packed.

After the departure, Kevin's visits thin out—but Ivy starts going out constantly, claiming dance classes, salon trips with friends, anything to fill the emptiness of a son abroad. Derek notes each excuse without comment. She says she can't stand missing the boy. He comforts her, saying the family will be reunited soon. She agrees: the three of them, together.

Episode 7

The day Derek has been building toward finally arrives. He calls a press conference and gathers the business world to watch him name his successor. Cameras roll as he announces that his son will take over as president of the group, effective immediately.

He hands over the equity transfer agreement—everything he owns, signed away in front of everyone. The room buzzes about the lucky heir, barely out of university, inheriting an empire. Then a voice cuts through the applause. Kevin Payne steps forward and declares that the young man is his son. The room goes silent.

Episode 8

The revelation detonates. Reporters and guests recoil—this is the poor student Derek sponsored, the one he treated like family, now publicly claiming his son and humiliating him in front of the entire business world. People call it the farmer and the snake, a favor repaid with betrayal, timed precisely for the moment the assets changed hands.

Ivy defends herself without a trace of guilt. She says she spent her first half of life trapped in a marriage she never wanted, that she only ever loved Kevin, and that in love, the one who isn't loved is the real outsider. Marriage, she insists, shouldn't be a cage. The crowd isn't buying it.

Episode 9

Derek Jr. makes his choice. He tells Derek that whatever years of care he received, blood comes first—Derek is not his real father. With everyone watching, he pushes the divorce agreement across the table and offers a monthly allowance of five hundred, a number that lands like a slap.

Allies urge Derek to fight, to sue and take back what's his. Kevin and Ivy counter with quiet threats, reminding everyone who now controls the group. One by one, the supporters back down. Derek looks at the paper, then signs it—and tells them that since they gave him such a surprise, he has a gift of his own to return.
