Episode 1

Samara Knight has spent eight years loving a man who never really saw her. As a child she was cast out and told she was unwanted, then found a moment of kindness from a boy who walked her home — a memory she never let go of. That boy grew up to be Michael King, and Samara became his secretary without him ever realizing who she was. Now she's pregnant and dreaming of telling him the news, only to overhear the truth: Michael says he's already found the girl from his childhood, and that their eight years together were just a substitute. Then a new face appears at the office — a young woman who looks strangely like Samara.

Episode 2

The new secretary introduces herself as Yvonne Song, and Samara feels the ground shift. Yvonne plays sweet and attentive, bringing Michael milk in the car, while he waves off Samara's presence as unimportant. When Samara tries to reach him, Michael has her drive Yvonne home instead, treating his old lover like hired help. Alone and frightened, Samara becomes convinced someone is following her and calls Michael for help — but he brushes her off, telling her to call the police. The cruelest cut comes quietly: Samara starts to understand that she has always been a stand-in, and the real girl has finally come back.

Episode 3

Yvonne spins a tearful story about being sent abroad by her family and rushing back the moment she could — and Michael believes every word. What he doesn't know is that Yvonne has figured out his real identity and is scheming to steal Samara's place, using Samara's own childhood history to marry into wealth. Samara confronts Michael directly, asking what she has meant to him all these years. She offers him a way out: if he loves her, she'll tell him about the baby; if not, she'll walk away with her child. His answer lands like a blade — it doesn't matter to him. Yvonne presses her advantage, moving closer to the family.

Episode 4

Michael lays out his plan: he intends to marry Yvonne, but since her background is modest, he'll groom her from secretary to project manager so she fits into the family. He even asks Samara to train the woman replacing her. When Samara reminds him she loves him, he reduces their years together to nothing more than a bedmate arrangement, and tells her flatly that if she's pregnant, she should abort. Then word comes that her grandfather has fallen from a ladder. Samara rushes to the hospital, where a doctor delivers a second blow — her pregnancy is fragile, and losing this child could mean never becoming a mother.

Episode 5

Recovering from a fever, Samara learns Michael had someone dump her by the roadside, then denies it coldly. He offers her a humiliating deal: stay by his side as his mistress. She refuses. Yvonne keeps up her act, needling Samara at the office and claiming she's only concerned, while Michael takes Yvonne's side without hesitation. Samara finally sees how little her devotion ever meant — just a scheme in his eyes. She whispers to her unborn child that maybe they don't need a father at all. Then a call shatters everything: her grandfather is critically ill and has been rushed into emergency care.

Episode 6

At the hospital, the grandfather clings to life, and Samara learns he may have only half a year left — treatment that could extend it will cost a fortune she doesn't have. He frets that he's become a burden, recalling how he took her out of the orphanage and raised her himself. Samara promises to bring Michael to see him tomorrow. But when she reaches out to Michael for a private word, he cuts her off, warning her not to use his personal number because Yvonne might get the wrong idea. Cornered and desperate, Samara is approached by a stranger on the street — and the night turns dangerous.

Episode 7

A man grabs Samara, and she threatens to call the police; he taunts her that they won't arrive in time. Michael shows up and misreads the whole scene, assuming she staged a fake boyfriend to provoke him. Humiliated, Samara finally asks the one thing she needs: her grandfather is dying and believes they're together, so could Michael pretend to be her boyfriend and visit him just once? Michael refuses, sneering that her grandfather's illness is none of his business and accusing her of playing pity games to trap him into marriage. He won't even look at her medical report. Instead, he makes a phone call to set a plan in motion.

Episode 8

Samara breaks down alone, and a stranger sidles up with false comfort, calling her a pretty girl and offering to take her away. She recoils and calls for Michael to save her. When Michael arrives, he sees the same man from before and dismisses the entire scene as another trick to lure him in. He walks off without a second thought, leaving her behind. The moment crystallizes everything: the man she gave eight years to is colder than she ever imagined. Whatever love she once held for him is being stripped away piece by piece.

Episode 9

Yvonne asks Michael to accompany her to the hospital for her father, and he agrees easily. Samara has been spending her days there caring for her grandfather, and when Yvonne's relative probes, Samara deflects — introducing Yvonne as a company intern covering for her. The tension spikes when Yvonne's cousin nearly exposes the truth and is sharply told to stay quiet. Yvonne then turns vicious, muttering that the old man brought his suffering on himself. Meanwhile, she discovers Samara is pregnant and resolves that Samara will never be allowed to have Michael's child.

Episode 10

Yvonne goes straight to Samara's grandfather, spinning a tearful lie: she claims she is Michael's real girlfriend, and that Samara is chasing him only to marry into money. She begs the old man to rein Samara in, even twisting the knife with cruel words about being an unwanted child. The grandfather, already frail, is devastated. Samara returns to find him in crisis and calls for help. Then Yvonne confronts Samara directly, declaring that she was only ever a substitute, that there's no place for her at Linhua anymore, and that she should resign quietly. Samara's answer makes clear she isn't going down without a fight.
