Out of Prison, Out of Love

Episode 1

Jane Leed walks out of prison after five years. The reunion is not warm. She is told she should have learned her lesson by now, and that a major international meeting was set aside just to collect her. At home, her parents have prepared a welcome dinner. But Jane says the truth out loud: Jane Leed pushed Gu Yilin down the stairs. No one believes her. Her mother says the Leed family has no such daughter. Jane finally sees it—she was never coming home to family, only to a role she was cast in five years ago.

Episode 2

Jane remembers Lu Chen, the childhood friend from the orphanage who once swore he would study law, become a top lawyer, and protect her for life. He did become a lawyer. He defended Jane in court and sent Jane to prison instead, arguing that Jane could never survive a place like that, so Jane should take the fall. Jane tells him what prison actually taught her: when you have no power and no one, you shrink yourself to survive. She gets in the car, but the hope Lu Chen once gave her is gone for good.

Episode 3

The family's script for Jane is simple: behave, drop the eldest-daughter attitude, stop making things difficult for Jane. Her brother reminds her the Leed family won't shortchange her if she stays quiet. Jane answers with the law—prisoners may see relatives once a month, and in sixty months her parents never came once. She also exposes the lie about three years in that house: she owned no formal dress, only jeans and a T-shirt bought with her own wages. Five years ago she had a top-university admission letter, but the family threw a grand celebration for Jane instead.

Episode 4

The party is the Leed family's big day, and Jane arrives in her old high school uniform—the same kind she wore when police cuffed her in front of the city's elite. Her brother is furious, accusing her of performing poverty for sympathy. He insists the finance office sent her 500,000 a month for three years, roughly eighteen million. Jane says she never received fifty yuan, let alone fifty thousand. He orders the accounts checked. The staff confirms it: not one payment ever reached Jane's card. He demands to know why.

Episode 5

The answer lands hard. The finance office never paid Jane because her mother canceled it—claiming a girl from an orphanage would be corrupted by that kind of money. Instead, Jane's monthly allowance was raised to a million, framed as compensation so Jane wouldn't feel hurt by Jane's return. Jane points out her parents never gave her a single yuan of pocket money either. Confronted, her mother claims she assumed someone else was paying, then coos that she treats both daughters equally. Jane's response is flat: her own mother blocked the money and doubled Jane's.

Episode 6

Jane asks for five thousand yuan for tuition and gets mocked instead of an answer. Her brother complains she only comes home to ask for money, and compares her to Jane, who placed tenth in her year and wants a hundred-thousand-yuan bag as a reward. He calls Jane last in her class. Jane corrects him: she ranked first every year of high school. He doesn't even know which school she attended. Her father asks why her student records were never transferred—and the question hangs there, because nobody in this family ever bothered to find out.

Episode 7

The truth comes out: Jane attended Haicheng No. 1 High School, the hardest school in the city to enter, where money means nothing and only scores matter. Her brother calls it impossible—it's thirty-odd kilometers away in the suburbs. Jane explains the rest: she never rode to school with Jane because they weren't at the same school, never ate breakfast with the family because she left at four in the morning, never came home at noon because there wasn't time, and had no money for food, surviving on hot water until the leftover scraps at night. Then she reveals her mother deleted the surveillance footage that could have cleared her.

Episode 8

Instead of shame, Jane gets accused of being bitter, twisted, and ungrateful—of using her suffering to attack Jane. Her brother insists the five years in prison should have taught her a lesson, not made her cause a scene. Then the real guest list surfaces: the invitations say it's Jane's birthday banquet, not a welcome-home dinner for Jane. Her father claims he didn't know she was released today. Jane realizes she was brought home in her old high school uniform to be humiliated in front of the city's elite. Walking out, she's knocked down, and the family blames her for not watching where she was going.

Episode 9

Jane apologizes sweetly—she only bumped Jane because she was upset that her custom gown was ruined. The family urges Jane to apologize to Jane and wish her a happy birthday, calling it settled. Jane refuses to confess to something she didn't do. She notes only she rode in the car and only she could have been blamed, then demands they check the dashcam to prove her innocence. Jane begs her not to, the guests are watching, and the family tries to shut it down. Jane asks the question that stops the room: if they're innocent, what are they afraid the footage will show?
