Parting Ways After Love Fades

Episode 1

Hope Shaw made a deal out of gratitude, not love. Emma Zell funded her education, and in return Hope agreed to stay beside Emma's son, John Bale, and help him heal from losing his first love. For five years she gave everything and got back cold indifference and half-hearted affection.

Now the contract has run out, and the first love, Anxin, has divorced and come home. John is suddenly happy and no longer harsh. Hope tells Emma she can finally leave, and Emma admits the years have been unfair to her. Hope says she wants to start a new life — and quietly, she begins to let go.

Episode 2

Hope keeps trying, even when it costs her. She gives John a gift, only to have it treated like trash. The effort is exhausting, and the message lands hard: five years of feeling cannot compete with the one who got away.

Word of Anxin's return has already reached the house. Yaoyao, John's sister, sneers that Hope is just a small-town girl who would sell even a scrap of cardboard, and mocks her for having played house for so long. Hope says nothing back. She just absorbs it, the way she has for years — while the household quietly rearranges itself around someone else.

Episode 3

Yaoyao stops pretending to be civil. She snaps at Hope, and when Anxin gently plays the peacemaker, calling Hope her sister-in-law, Yaoyao laughs it off — her brother only ever loved Anxin, visited her abroad every week, bought her all those gifts.

Then comes the real blow: Anxin has just returned and needs her place renovated, so she will be staying in John's home. Yaoyao calls Hope a sycophant chasing her brother, with no right to be angry. Hope agrees she has no right — then tells Anxin to settle in comfortably. After all, she says, she does not want a man who does not want her.

Episode 4

Anxin's boxes are carried straight into the master bedroom — the room that belongs to the wife. No one stops it. Then the orders begin: Hope is told to cook, and to keep it mild because Anxin cannot handle spicy food.

Hope says she cannot do it. Anxin immediately performs the wounded guest, saying she should just leave since she is an outsider. Yaoyao pounces, accusing Hope of throwing a tantrum over something as small as making a meal, and reminds everyone that Anxin has a stomach condition. Hope, dizzy and pale from low blood sugar, is still pushed toward the kitchen. John does not defend her.

Episode 5

John threatens Hope if she will not cook for Anxin. Anxin steps in sweetly and suggests hotpot instead, reminiscing about eating it at John's house back in high school — a memory Hope was never part of. John has the staff prepare it, and Hope is left standing there, told plainly that her brother does not like her and she should take the hint and leave.

At the table, Anxin "accidentally" forgets that Hope is allergic to seafood. Then a plate goes down, oil splashes, and someone is burned. Anxin cries out in pain. Hope is hurt too — but the room's attention has already turned elsewhere.

Episode 6

Anxin is rushed toward the hospital while Hope, also burned, is dismissed as thick-skinned and accused of faking it for sympathy. John orders the best dermatologist in the city for Anxin — over a few drops of hotpot oil. Hope is left behind.

Later, at a gathering, a bet is made: whoever's companion can retrieve a ring from the pool wins a piece of land. Hope cannot swim, but she jumps in anyway and comes up with the ring. John asks her to marry him for real and says he will try to love her. Hope refuses. Five years of effort never made him love her, so she tells him she is leaving to live her own life — and walks away.

Episode 7

At the hospital, the doctor delivers the truth: Anxin is not injured at all. There is only a little chili oil on her arm that could be wiped off. Yaoyao insists it cannot be true, but the doctor stands by decades of diagnosis without a single error. Anxin quickly apologizes, claiming she was just frightened.

John says nothing much and steps out to make a call. He orders the driver to the airport and tries Hope's phone, but no one answers. Furious that she would hang up on him, he demands to know where she is — and learns she is not home. She has already gone.

Episode 8

John refuses to believe it. Yaoyao insists Hope is just throwing a dramatic runaway act to get attention, the same tricks she used when she was chasing him. But the staff correct them: Hope left a document bag behind, took her suitcase, and no one could stop her.

Yaoyao still spins it as manipulation, yet even she admits Hope seemed genuinely angry this time. Anxin softly urges John to open the bag, calling it maybe a surprise. John hesitates — and the question hangs there. What did Hope leave behind, and what will it make him finally understand?
