Reborn to Let Go

The day her husband Owen Whitman's parents are kidnapped, Kaitlyn McGee stops him from going on a camping trip with his mistress and demands that he save them instead, which unfortunately results in the death of his mistress in spite of successfully saving his parents.

Story Recap

Episode 1

Kaitlyn McGee starts the day knowing exactly how this story ends. Her husband, Owen Whitman, is heading out to go camping with his mistress, Snow, when the kidnappers call: his parents, Gao Shicheng and Yu Shuang, have been taken. In her last life, Kaitlyn begged him to stay and save them. Snow died waiting for him, and Owen blamed Kaitlyn for it.

This time she blocks the door without flinching. Owen sneers that she's staging the whole thing to keep him home. Kaitlyn doesn't beg. She tells him to listen to the phone before he walks out, and quietly resolves that this round, she saves his parents herself.

Episode 2

The kidnappers' demand lands hard: 30 million, delivered to Taihe Square within half an hour, or the parents die. Owen refuses to believe a word of it. He accuses Kaitlyn of dragging his mother and father into an act just to sabotage his trip with Snow, and tells her to let go of him.

Kaitlyn holds on anyway. She knows she isn't performing, because she lived through this once already and watched it end with the parents rescued and Snow dead, with every ounce of blame landing on her. This time she says she won't ask Owen for anything. She picks up the phone and reports the kidnapping herself.

Episode 3

The police arrive skeptical. Zhang Qiang warns Kaitlyn that filing a false report is no small matter, and that Owen already told people she's faking the whole thing to keep him home. He tells her to stop wasting his time.

Kaitlyn doesn't back down. She plays the recording for him: Gao Shicheng and Yu Shuang are in the kidnappers' hands, 30 million in ransom, half an hour, Taihe Square, or they'll be collecting bodies. Only then does Zhang Qiang admit he was delayed because someone kept him from coming sooner. The clock is already running.

Episode 4

Kaitlyn scrambles for cash. Her account holds only 17 million, far short of the 30 million, so she calls Owen's uncle to borrow the remaining 13 million. The uncle is stunned that Owen would go camping while his own parents are kidnapped, and promises to help raise the money.

But the doubt spreads. Zhang Qiang needles Kaitlyn for dragging the uncle into her "act," insisting Owen and Snow are innocent and that she's making a spectacle of the family. Kaitlyn keeps insisting she isn't lying, and that a ransom call is coming.

Episode 5

The uncle wavers too. He scolds Kaitlyn for frightening her elders with such a story, and even suggests she and Owen should just divorce so they can both be free. Even the police grow impatient: half an hour has passed, no kidnapper has called back, and there's no kidnapping case at all. They threaten to detain her for a false report and obstruction.

Kaitlyn refuses to leave. She begs for one more minute, half a minute even, offering to be arrested if nothing happens. She says Owen may have betrayed her, but his parents always treated her kindly, and she won't watch them be killed.

Episode 6

The line finally crackles to life. A kidnapper demands to know if the money is ready. Kaitlyn stalls, explaining her husband isn't home and she can't pull together that much cash yet. She pleads for more time, arguing that killing the hostages gets them nothing, and buys herself half an hour.

The threat is immediate and ugly: they'll start cutting if the money doesn't arrive. Kaitlyn hears the parents' terrified cries in the background. Now the people around her finally believe her. Someone rushes to call Owen and tell him his mother and father really have been taken.

Episode 7

Kaitlyn desperately tries to reach Owen, but he won't pick up. The person on his end mocks her, claiming Owen is busy grilling food, then taunts her about his parents "putting on such a show." Owen himself brushes it off, saying his parents' "performance" doesn't matter as much as staying with Snow.

Left with no help, Kaitlyn decides to deliver the money herself, hoping her presence raises the odds the police crack the case. Zhang Qiang refuses to let her go alone, warning that if the kidnappers recognize him, the whole plan collapses. He insists on protecting her in person.

Episode 8

At the drop-off, the kidnapper instructs Kaitlyn to leave the money on a fire hose cabinet on the first floor, then head to the parking lot where the parents are supposedly waiting in a car. She demands to hear their voices first.

The kidnapper dodges, telling her she'll see them soon enough. Kaitlyn places the money and moves toward the garage, calling out for her mother and father. She finds them, but they're bound and struggling. As she tries to free them, only one vehicle remains, and the danger is far from over.

Episode 9

The rescue turns bloody. The parents are badly hurt, and Kaitlyn begs them to hold on while the police and medics close in. Yu Shuang murmurs that she doesn't blame Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn sobs that she's the one who failed, that she didn't gather the money in time.

But Owen still won't answer. His phone is off, even as his mother bleeds and his father's condition worsens. Kaitlyn keeps dialing, pleading with him to come back, while the people around her fight to keep the parents alive.

If you've ever wanted to watch someone finally stop begging for scraps and take the wheel, hit play and see how far Kaitlyn will go.
