The Country Husband You Should Never Cross

Episode 1

John Cosby has spent twenty years training on a mountain, and his mentor finally has enough of him eating the place bare. Before sending him down, the old man hands over a jade token and a mission: head to Jiangzhou and honor an arranged marriage with the eldest Lane daughter. John doesn't want to go, but the promise of learning about his real identity pulls him off the mountain.

On the road he flags down a car and lands in the middle of a chase. The woman inside says she's the second Lane daughter, and someone is trying to kill her. John climbs in, and the pursuers close in fast.

The Lane household is busy preparing for a gathering. The patriarch has called everyone home to discuss the will, and he's announced a special guest. The eldest daughter arrives late and immediately starts needling the second daughter, accusing her of dragging a beggar into the family.

John steps forward and introduces himself to the Lane patriarch as the disciple sent to marry the eldest daughter. The room goes quiet. Episode 5

The family waits for the Wang family to arrive and make their proposal official, but the patriarch has other plans. He tells the eldest daughter that John is the husband he's chosen for her, and the room erupts.

She refuses outright, calling John a country bumpkin and a nobody. Family members pile on, questioning his background and mocking the idea of a mountain farmer marrying into the Lanes. The eldest daughter is livid that the villa she wanted has gone to her sister and John. She rants about wasted connections and calls John trash she threw away. The patriarch cuts her off and says the inheritance will be redistributed once John and the second daughter formally marry.

After he's helped out to rest, the eldest daughter corners her sister and threatens her, promising that once she becomes a Wang family bride, the two of them won't even be fit to carry her shoes. The second daughter doesn't back down. The sisters' hatred clearly runs deeper than this one fight.

Episode 9

Back at the villa, the tension between John and the second daughter turns awkward and domestic. She's cold on the surface but flustered underneath, and John keeps pushing her buttons with deadpan teasing about shared slippers and bathroom boundaries.

She deflects every attempt at closeness, but she can't hide that she's rattled by him — and John notices. The two of them circle each other in the small space of their new marriage, neither sure how much of this is a contract and how much is something else. Episode 10

A phone call interrupts the night: a man invites the second daughter to a dance and John answers, telling him flatly that his wife is resting. She is surprised he knew the man was pursuing her. John shrugs it off — he's not blind.
