What She Left Behind

Episode 1

Isla Stern has spent years inside a palace that once felt like a promise. She helped Shaun Laine climb from a forgotten prince in the cold palace to emperor, and on their wedding day he defied the world with a vow: one life, one pair of people, his harem hers alone. Their son, Shaun Laine, was named crown prince. Then the cracks show — her husband and son leave her meals early, and she sees them covering for a woman. The vows she trusted are already breaking.

Episode 2

Shaun Laine presents the new tutor he has chosen for their son: Tanya Yale. He asks Isla to meet her, and Tanya greets the empress with practiced politeness. Isla swallows her unease and lets the girl stay close to Shaun Laine, excusing her from formal bows. But the truth cuts deeper than she expected. She gave Shaun her devotion, and now the son she carried for ten months is turning toward Tanya too — and both of them keep finding reasons to bring Tanya right in front of her.

Episode 3

Isla questions why Shaun Laine needs another tutor when he already has one, but Shaun insists Tanya has traveled widely and has much to teach. Shaun Laine openly says he loves her lessons. Then, in private, Tanya is afraid to sleep alone, and Shaun comes to her at night. Shaun Laine cheerfully asks Tanya for little brothers and sisters. Isla watches the two people she loves most drift toward another woman, while she counts down to a rare celestial event she believes can carry her home.

Episode 4

A servant brings Isla lychees, saying the crown prince sent them — but her son seems to have forgotten she is allergic. Meanwhile, an astronomer confirms the rare nine-star alignment will appear in the southeast, the one chance Isla has to return to her own world. She presses him to be certain, knowing that if the crossing fails she will die in this life. When Shaun asks whether she likes Tanya, the question lands like a test she cannot afford to fail.

Episode 5

Shaun and Shaun Laine plan to watch the celestial alignment, and Tanya asks to come along. Shaun agrees to take her to the Liao Star Terrace — the very place where he and Isla married, meant only for emperor and empress. He waves off the tradition as too rigid, and Shaun Laine backs him. Isla remembers Shaun's old promise: if he ever betrayed her, she would vanish from his world forever, and he swore he would search heaven and earth to find her. He spoke first, and broke his word.

Episode 6

For Isla's birthday, Shaun announces an unprecedented palace banquet in her honor, and the court marvels at an emperor who keeps only one woman in his harem. The pastries are said to be made by Shaun Laine's own hands — a picture of devotion. But behind the celebration, Shaun comforts Tanya, promising her everything Isla has and more. Shaun Laine tells Tanya not to be jealous of his mother, saying the gifts he gives Isla are only what Tanya left behind.

Episode 7

After a sudden crisis, Shaun sits at a bedside begging forgiveness, saying he called the wrong name in a moment of panic. Tanya keeps watch too, and Shaun Laine complains that both of them spend every day with her and none with him. Tanya coaxes the boy, asking if he wants a little brother or sister, and he eagerly agrees, running off to keep the servants away. Isla lies injured while the family she built orbits someone else.

Episode 8

Tanya drops all pretense. She tells Isla that Shaun favors her, that the gifts Isla treasures were things Tanya rejected, and that even the supplements meant to keep Isla alive were fed to her first. She mocks Isla's marriage as hollow — husband and son both put Tanya first. Then Tanya is poisoned, and Shaun and Shaun Laine turn on Isla, accusing her of using a deadly poison. Isla protests that she has not left the capital in ten years. The imperial doctor says only the poisoner's blood can cure Tanya.

Episode 9

Isla refuses to confess to a poisoning she did not commit. Shaun Laine begs his mother not to leave, warning that Tanya will die without her blood, while Shaun demands she comply. Isla asks the question that breaks her: why will they believe Tanya and never her? They move to take her blood by force. As she is held, she remembers Shaun's old oath to never let her suffer again — a promise that now rings hollow against what he is doing.

Episode 10

Shaun and Shaun Laine pound on Isla's door, insisting she is the poisoner and has no right to be angry. Shaun Laine promises that once Tanya drinks her blood, everything will be fine. Inside, Isla orders her servants to burn every gift — the hairpin from their first year, the medicine from their third, the ill-fitting shoes from their fifth. She says the most precious item cannot compare to her freedom. Ten years have left her with nothing, and now she means to live as she chooses.
